Bucketfilling might be familiar to some of you, but it was a concept I had not heard of until I read the book True Bucketfilling Stories: Legacies of Love by Stacey Lundgren. Basically the idea is that each person has an invisible bucket that when full, allows the person to feel happy and contented with life. When the bucket is empty, the person feels sad and lonely, perhaps.
Schools use the concept of bucketfilling a lot in order to meet the emotional needs of the many students who come to school from broken families or have emotional needs. Stacy Lundgren’s book is a great resource for teachers to use in their classrooms when teaching students about bucketfilling.
Each chapter tells a story about another person who needs to have his or her bucket filled and the circumstances surrounding the filling of the empty bucket. At the end of the stories, the circumstances of the person’s life may or may not have changed, but the person felt happy again.
The lesson taught in this book reach beyond simply doing nice things for others. There is an

important lesson about the power of the mind and one person’s ability to make a ripple effect in the lives of others around him or her. At the end of each chapter there are discussion questions that provide teachers an opportunity to use the story as a teaching opportunity for their students.
The nature of the stories may make this book more appropriate for an older elementary age student through adult age. Teachers of younger students may wish to read the stories first and decide on a case by case basis if it is appropriate for their students.
If you want to get more out of life, help someone you love or feel better about something in your life, read this book. I think it will touch your heart and give you something special to think about.
