Cornstarch dough is a simple play dough recipe that uses cornstarch (thus the name) and is a great option for children to learn how to mix up their own dough as well as create hours of play time.
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup water
- Food coloring/paint
How to Make Cornstarch Dough
To make cornstarch dough, an adult needs to help. First, the baking soda, water and cornstarch need to be mixed together in a saucepan. This mixture needs to be heated over low heat. The child or adult needs to stir the mixture with a wood spoon as it cooks and the mixture will slowly thicken.
Once the dough is thick enough, a few drops of food coloring can be mixed in to add color. Alternately children can skip the food coloring and paint it later.
Once the dough is cool enough to work with, children can work it just like clay, molding it into whatever shape they wish. The dough can then be air dried and painted or stored in the refrigerator in a plastic bag to preserve the moisture and allow for additional playtime.
