The Facts on Disabilities

Children with a learning disability benefit from specialized instruction and accommodations in order to succeed in school and in life. How does a parent figure out if their child qualifies for these specialized services?

In order to receive specialized services, a child must be diagnosed with a specific learning disability or other disability such as ADHD or Autism. Each disability has its own battery of tests that a professional must administer in order to qualify the child for services.

Labeling a Child with a Disability

Many parents do not like the idea of having their child “labeled”. While there are many reasons behind this issue, sometimes the label is inevitable. A learning disability effects every single person in the child’s life including the parents, siblings and the child himself.

While many parents may be hesitant to have their child diagnosed with a disability, in fact many students will move past their disability and go on to lead normal lives thanks to the interventions and services that are available to them during their school years.
