Speaking Pathways Review

Speaking Pathways by Dolores Hiskes is a helpful phonics resource. This CD Consists of two parts: Letters and sounds in part one and spelling rules and patterns in part two. The pronunciation and enunciation is clear and careful so that students who are learning phonics can understand and hear each sound.

Speaking Pathways is designed in a way that makes it useful for a teacher to implement it in a reading center in the classroom. Students will be asked to listen for specific sounds in words, and several examples are given for each letter/sound.

Benefits and Drawbacks to Speaking Pathways:

Speaking Pathways can be an excellent resource for teachers. The contents of the CD are included in the jacket flap to help the teacher decide which track to have students listen to. This CD is a great way to allow students to have additional independent practice with specific phonics skills.

While a good resource, students may find the tracks boring as each track is all business and not a lot of fun and games.

In the end, if a teacher is using Phonics or Reading Pathways, Speaking pathways will round out the phonics instructional resources in the classroom.
