Reading to students at the end of the school day is as important as teaching reading during the day. Students need to have a chance to sit and listen to a story, even if they claim they do not care or want to.
Reading to students, no matter what age, is vital in the effort to make students good readers. How can we expect students to read and enjoy reading if they do not ever see the adults in their lives reading and enjoying reading? Reading interesting and exciting books to students at the end of each day can introduce students to genres they wouldn’t normally read, and provide a demonstration of what a good reader sounds like.
Picking a chapter book is a great way to engage students, this way students are eager to hear what happens next. Additionally, younger students may not feel capable of reading longer chapter books and this provides a way for them to enjoy a book they otherwise would have avoided.
While reading to students at the end of the day, teachers can have those students multi-task. While they are listening, they can clean their desks, pick up trash from the floors and get packed up to go. This provides a way for teachers to find the time to read and will keep antsy students out of trouble.
