Students who are difficult to manage in class often have parents who either don’t know or don’t care about their child’s behavior in school. These students also can come from home lives that are less than optimal and parents may not know what to do to help the student improve his or her behavior.
Report card comments for these students can depend on the situation and whether the parent is involved. Here are some examples:
For the parent who does not know what is going on: be clear and specific so the parent has a better understanding of their child’s behavior. (remember to use student’s name)
Student makes careless errors in class work.
Student has turned in 30% of assignments in late.
Student has only turned in 50% of all homework assignments.
Student rushes through assignments, turning in messy and often incorrect work.
Student is easily distracted by peers despite attempts to improve seating arrangements.
Student often gets into fights on the playground and carries a poor attitude in the classroom.
Student struggles to complete a task independently.
For the parent who does know what is going on: be encouraging but do not gloss over continuing difficulties in the child’s behavior.
Student is learning to be a better listener.
Student is beginning to follow one-step directions without a second prompt.
Student is beginning to show more independence in the classroom.
For the parent who does not seem to care what is going on: these parents are often detached due to personal difficulties at home and feel that it is the teacher’s job to handle any problems in the classroom. While documenting the specific problems as listed above are important, positive comments might also lead the parent to trust the teacher more, building a camaraderie that might come in help with discipline issues later. Here are some positive comments that can often be said even of those students who are difficult in the classroom:
Student is enthusiastic about participating.
Student has a great sense of humor.
Student expresses ideas clearly.
Student speaks with confidence to the class.
