The Don’t Give Up Kid

The Don’t-give-up kid by Jeanne Gehret tells the story of a kid who has a specific learning disability in the area of reading. Alex is introduced in the book first by his determination to not give up, then readers find out that Alex cannot read.

After Alex goes to the doctor, he finds out that he has a unique problem with learning to read, something that Alex does not like to hear. At school, Alex begins to work with a special education teacher, and learns that his determination can help him learn to read. In the end, Alex figures out how to read and how to get the cookies he has been trying to reach throughout the book.
