Routines for Children with Autism
While many students are labeled as autistic there is in fact a large spectrum of symptoms that fall on the autistic scale. Even so, there are some generalities that will help teachers integrate a student with autism into the classroom. One thing that often helps a student with autism is a predictable routine.
Students with autism thrive on a predictable routine. An autistic child may have difficulty coping with unexpected changes to the routine and react with stereotypical autistic symptoms including rocking and repeating the same word or phrase. This repetition helps to calm the child.
Write down the class routine and refer to the schedule often throughout the day. The student can have a copy of the schedule taped to his or her desk as well. It is important to prepare the student for changes in the schedule and having the routine written down can help the student stay relaxed during the changes throughout the day.
