The kinesthetic learner moves and touches everything. This student will enjoy taking things apart and be able put them back together again. This student will learn by touching, feeling and exploring with their hands. This learning style is also referred to as the tactile learning style.
Learning traits of the kinesthetic learner:
- Good at sports
- Enjoys activities involving touch
- Will enjoy hands-on activities
- May move around the classroom frequently, or tap foot or pencil constantly
Tips for teaching the kinesthetic learner:
Teachers with a kinesthetic learner in the classroom should plan as many activities as possible that allow for movement while learning. Allowing the student to move will help as well, providing the task is being completed. Some things that may be allowed include:
- standing at the desk or table to do homework,
- fiddling with a pencil,
- dancing in her seat, etc.
A teacher may find it helpful to use a clock or timer to help cue the student to how long any given assignment should take to help keep the student focused. After recess, a teacher should provide a calming activity for the student to work on first, before moving to another task. Using manipulatives to teach will provide immeasurable help to this student who learns through touch.
