Teaching Tips for the Auditory Learner

An auditory learner may seem like she is always talking, telling jokes and sharing stories. When a teacher feels like there is one or more students who never stop talking, this may in fact be a learning style and understanding it’s power will be immensely helpful.

Common learning traits of the auditory learner:

  • Talks a lot
  • Remembers things that are spoken
  • Can memorize things easily,
  • The student may read better when reading aloud or whisper reading

Teaching Tips for working with the Auditory Learner:

The auditory learner will do best in a quiet environment with as little noise disturbance as possible. This means the playground is not the best option for catching up on extra homework, for example. Encourage the student to read and study out loud, and if taking notes is an issue, allow the student to use a tape recorder in class. Have the student repeat directions aloud and whenever possible, allow spoken answers to questions.
