Finding the Right Tutor

Finding the right tutor for your child is important. Here are some questions to ask when contacting a potential tutor:

* What age do you typically work with?
* What subject areas do you typically tutor in?
* How much do your charge?
* Have you worked in the school system?

* How much teaching/tutoring experience do you have?

You need to also ask any specific questions that relate to your situation, for example:

* Have you worked with any special needs children?

* Can you come to my home for tutoring?

.

While talking to the tutor, pay careful attention to the person’s attitude and energy level. Making sure that your child will mesh well with the tutor is very important. Read this article for more ideas: How to Find a Tutor

.

*ask for references*

Any tutor worth your time and money will be able to provide you with references. If the tutor is new and has no previous clients, ask to meet in the library and to see a resume or other proof of education necessary to tutor your child.

Good advice! While those are good questions to ask, and references are a must, I felt I had to point out that a resume doesn’t offer proof of education. If you have a brand new person with no references, you might want to ask for a transcript, or ask them some questions on the subject.
That’s one reason I like organizations like College Tutors (http://www.collegetutors.com/tutor/). There might be others — I just don’t know of any. But having a tutor from an organization that vets them for you first gives you peace of mind. And, from the tutor’s point of view, they don’t have so much trouble finding that first student.

Great point! Finding a tutor through an organization is an excellent option for many parents. It is important to check out the organization as well to see what requirements they have for their tutors. Some require very little and some require much more. Asking for recommendations from teachers or other parents is an additional option that can lead to finding a great tutor.
